Introduction

A leading global automotive organisation is seeking an Expert Full Stack Developer / Senior Java Consultant to join a high-performing Mainframe-to-Cloud Migration team.

This is a strategic role focused on the modernisation of legacy COBOL/PL1 mainframe applications and their transition into modern, scalable Java and cloud-based architectures.

The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on Java expertise with technical leadership, architecture, Agile delivery, DevOps and migration experience to help design and implement a modern migration factory.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the migration of legacy COBOL/PL1 mainframe applications to Java and cloud architectures.
  • Analyse existing mainframe applications, datasets, dependencies and interconnections.
  • Design migration strategies, target architectures and technical solution spaces.
  • Develop and review Java-based enterprise applications using Core Java, Spring, Spring Boot and J2EE.
  • Design code-conversion platforms and support migration from COBOL/PL1 to Java.
  • Evaluate and support proof-of-concepts involving mainframe-to-Java conversion tools.
  • Work with infrastructure and cloud teams to map mainframe components to appropriate cloud services.
  • Design and implement scalable, highly available and secure cloud solutions.
  • Participate in system integration, testing, parallel runs and implementation.
  • Lead troubleshooting, debugging, incident, problem and change management activities.
  • Drive the vision and delivery of the Feature Team in alignment with Product Owners and Team Leads.
  • Plan, monitor and measure project delivery, ensuring timelines, budgets and quality standards are achieved.
  • Facilitate Agile ceremonies and continuously improve team delivery practices.
  • Mentor and coach technical team members.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders, suppliers and external technology partners.
  • Prepare and present architecture, technical and project recommendations.
  • Ensure appropriate technical documentation, quality assurance and system audit requirements are met.
  • Support post-migration optimisation of cloud infrastructure for performance, cost and efficiency.

Skills

Java & Development

  • 10+ years' IT/software development experience
  • Expert knowledge of Java
  • Strong Core Java, OOP, multithreading, exception handling, collections, generics and I/O
  • Strong experience with Spring / Spring Boot / Spring MVC
  • J2EE experience
  • Integration between multiple technologies and systems
  • Hibernate / ORM experience advantageous
  • Web application development experience

Mainframe & Migration

  • Strong understanding of mainframe environments
  • Experience with COBOL and/or PL1
  • Knowledge of DB2 and/or IMS
  • Mainframe application modernisation / migration experience
  • Experience transitioning legacy applications to Java and/or cloud
  • Knowledge of code-conversion tools such as Astadia, Heirloom or Blue Age advantageous
  • Experience designing migration strategies and target architectures

Cloud & DevOps

  • Strong AWS Cloud experience
  • Azure knowledge advantageous
  • Cloud architecture and modernisation experience
  • Serverless development
